Squashed

Squashed, originally uploaded by Universal Pops.

My home town of Charlotte Court House in Virginia is very rural with farms and woods within the town limits. The trees here, with the ruined shed, have been transformed by the snow from the conventional to something special.

I've always loved looking into a forest while riding past in a car - sometimes you can catch a glimpse of a deer or a bird.

Swineholes Wood

Swineholes Wood, originally uploaded by Hobo style.

A foggy day at Swineholes wood near Ipstones in the Staffordshire Moorlands close to the Pennine National park.

Swineholes Wood is 61 acres of heathland and is an area of special scientific interest.
The site is managed by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust who through careful land management is creating a rich diversity of species and habitats.

The broadleaf trees, predominantly oak and rowan, are relatively new additions to the site. As the woodland becomes more established the tree canopy closes in and eventually shades out the heathy ground flora for which the site is so important. Management of the reserve therefore aims to maintain the balance between the open heathland and expanding woodland.

Some areas are kept clear of trees with the intention or retaining open moorland. In other areas the woodland is being thinned to ensure that the heathland shrubs can still survive whilst still retaining some woodland cover.

forest

The photo was taken late January, in Galloway Forest Park, Scotland. (Probably about two hours south of Glasgow.) It was a clear but cold day - and once we started ascending the mountains there, the snow made it very difficult.

Golden light

Golden light, originally uploaded by Tamara van Molken.

This was really one of the best days this year a beautiful evening (although it was -15C) in a snowy Finland. This picture is taken in the National Park Nuuksiopaa in the south of Finland. Apparently it had been snowing for some time but when I took this picture it was a wonderful sunny day (even though it was so cold that I had little ice drops on my eyelashes hahaha).
