More mix of trees in the valley

My wife talked me into taking a long weekend trip to Banff. I will think of it as a camping trip as I was cut off from communication with the outside world... But it was in and around the Banff area so not so camping.

The first stop on the trip was in the Bow Valley, a trail called 'Many Springs.' It takes you down to Mirror Lake and then around before finally showing you the springs that heat up the lake and keep it free from ice year round.

rather in a small patch of woods next to the office building were I

work near NYC. There were deer though :-)

Mangroves are trees and shrubs that grow along a saline strip along the coast, now and then swamped by tides. The thin roots provide a habitat for shrimps and small fish, break up waves and hold back silt and soil from that

damage coral reefs.

Mangroves can keep rising seas at bay to a certain extent, giving communities more time to adjust. The trees can help people cope with heatwaves and help break up waves in the event of a tropical storm.

Like in many parts of Indonesia, vast swathes of mangrove forest in "the neck of Bali", a strip of land that connects a tiny peninsula in the south to the main part of the island, were turned into shrimp ponds during a boom in the 1980s.

But the ponds were soon abandoned, leaving large areas barren. Scientists later discovered that violent waves were chipping away at the coast, sparking fears that lower part of the island could be cut off in a decade's time.

A government project sponsored by Japan's development arm set off in the early 1990s to restore the area's vast mangroves, filling about 1,000 hectares of land with nearly 20 types of mangrove...(Reuters)

US Forest Service and the Ad Council about a Public Service Announcement campaign

The amount of time U.S. children spend outdoors has declined 50% in the past 20 years, according to the Ad Council. The Forest Service is hoping to change this startling statistic through a PSA project entitled “Where the Other You Lives” that encourages tweens and their parents to re-connect with the great outdoors.

The Forest Service and the Ad Council created a microsite for the campaign where you can find local parks and pick up ideas on what to do on an outdoor adventure (leaf rubs, tracking animals, learning to use a compass). It's so important that our kids learn about, understand and spend time in nature. With a healthy and curious relationship with the world around them, our children are more likely to feel responsible for its well-being.

Pine Forest

This photo was taken during a nature walk on the island of Tromsø in northern Norway.

There are very few tall trees on the island but during my walk with Adam from Elverhøy to Ørndalen we discovered a small grove of pine trees. Reminds me of home.
