Alexander Springs, Ocala National Forest, FL; June 2009

This photo was taken at Alexander Springs, in the Ocala National Forest, in central Florida. The water in the photograph is Alexander Creek.

From the Alexander Springs website description:
The spring is set in a low area with thick sub-tropical forest on two sides and pines and hardwoods in a camping area on the other. The spring pool is a large semi-circle about 200 feet across and forming the headwaters of Alexander Creek. Water flows from a cavernous opening near the middle of the pool. The depth of the pool gradually increases to about 6 feet over the course of 60 feet. The bottom in this shallow portion is sandy. There is then a 40-foot-wide fringe of aquatic vegetation before the bottom falls away suddenly to reveal a large open area of exposed and sand-covered limestone rock and boulders. The area forms a sunlit trench that is 45 feet long, 10-25 feet wide, and about 28 feet deep. Water flows strongly from a large opening on the bottom on the beach side of the spring. Water in the spring is very clear and can be bright blue over the vent area. Flow from the spring creates a large and powerful surface boil that is readily visible from the shore.

Fish, including bluegill, may be observed swimming among the aquatic plants and over the trench. The spring run narrows outside the pool and winds first SE then NE a total of about 25 miles to the St. Johns River in the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge. There is abundant wildlife in the run, including alligators.

Forest on the Macin branch of Danube river bank

It is a forest in the Lower Danube everglade, near the town of Macin. I will geotag it.
It stretches along the Macin branch of Lower Danube, also known locally as "the old branch".
The trees are willows and seem to have been planted in straight lines, long ago.
The forest is often flooded when the water is high, especialy during spring. You can see the roots grown high on the trunks, because there used to be water. I think the last big flood happened in 2006.

Parkanaur Forest Park

Parkanaur is situated right in the heart of the province close to the historic town of Dungannon in Co Tyrone Ireland

It is possible to sight buzzards, treecreepers and blackcaps. While in the spring time the forest floor is awash with bluebells. Other parts of the trails take in woodland stands include trees grown specifically for their timber and includes pines, spruces, oaks and larches. Another path takes the visitor to St. Patrick’s Well.

As an old estate Parkanaur has several impressive and unusual specimen trees (both broadleaved and coniferous). Tree species include 400 year old oaks, beeches and pines as well other magnificent specimens collected from all over the world centred in the arboretum (collection of exotic tress). Parkanaur is of particular interest to conservationists because it is being developed mainly as an oak forest - something which cannot be done on the upland forests with their unsuitable weather and peaty soils. The Torrent River runs through the forest and this can be spectacular in times of flood. There are the occasional sightings of otter and dippers. While part of the river forms a pond that attracts ducks.

The white fallow deer in the deer park are most attractive. There are usually between 20 and 25 in number. These are the descendants from a pair that were sent by Queen Elizabeth I to her niece at Mallow Castle in County Countyk as a wedding gift. This herd have been in Parkanaur Forest since the mid 70’s at the instigation of the Forest Service. Members of the public are welcome to walk through the deer enclosure by a designated path. Some caution may be necessary during the rutting season (October).

Fading Light

Fading Light, originally uploaded by ddulitz50.

The trees are on my neighbor's property. I trespass often to take pictures. In the afternoon, the view is especially beautiful because the light falls perfectly. I recently moved to western Pennsylvania and had no idea it is as beautiful as it is.

More Than A Little Bark

More Than A Little Bark, originally uploaded by BeautifulRust.

Spending time in the forest is my favorite activity. My mind and heart are clear of daily worries; my head becomes filled with the sounds and sights of the natural surroundings. My lungs breathe easier; I become joyful; I feel peaceful. The peace follows me then as I leave the shaded treeline and re-enter the sunny street.

The more I focus on the environment around me, the more I see.
